About this page
Where the audio comes from
TryEnglish does not bundle recorded audio yet. If your device has an installed English voice, listening uses it at a speed you choose. A synthetic voice is one example of English pronunciation, not a target accent. If no local voice is available, you get the transcript-first path — the same questions, read instead of heard.
Fair dictation checking
Dictation compares words, not exact strings. Contractions match full forms, capital letters do not matter, and punctuation is shown as a note instead of a mistake. Missing, extra and changed words are highlighted so you can see exactly what you missed.
Questions
Why is there no sound on my device?
Your browser did not report any English voice installed on the device. We do not use online voices because they can send text to a server. You can install a voice in your operating system’s speech settings.
I am deaf or hard of hearing. Can I still use this?
Yes. Every listening activity works in transcript mode, and dictation has a visual memory mode. Your results are not marked as failures for using them.
What level are the reading passages?
Each passage is labelled foundation or intermediate with the authored criteria (length, sentence length, vocabulary). These are our labels, not CEFR levels.
