Speaking practice

Record and replay yourself, shadow short phrases, and review your speaking with a clear checklist. Audio stays in memory unless you decide to save it on this device.

Describe your weekend

Talk about what you did last weekend and one thing you enjoyed.

Plan, then speak
  1. Where you were
  2. What you did
  3. Something you enjoyed and why

Recording stays in this tab’s memory and is never uploaded. It disappears when you leave, unless you choose “Save on this device”.

On-device speech recognition: checking…

Self-review (rubric-1)

Listen back (or think back) and rate honestly. This is your own judgement — it is stored as self-review, never as a test score.

Key words were clear — Would a listener catch the important words (names, numbers, verbs)?
I stressed the important words — Content words louder/longer than small words like a, the, to.
I paused between phrases, not in the middle — Short pauses at commas and ends of ideas.
My pace was comfortable — Not rushed; slow enough to be easy to follow.
I said everything I planned — All points of the outline, or the full sentence.

About this page

Self-review comes first

Automatic pronunciation scores are often wrong for regional accents and noisy rooms. TryEnglish uses a simple self-review rubric — clear key words, stress, pausing, pace and completeness — which works on any device. Your ratings are kept separately and never turned into an "accent score".

Sound contrasts without shaming

Minimal-pair sets (vest/west, ship/sheep, thin/tin, late/let and more) show how each sound is made and use context sentences, so you can practise even without audio. The goal is that words stay distinct for listeners, not that you sound like one particular country.

On-device speech recognition

Some browsers can recognise speech entirely on the device. TryEnglish checks for that local-only path before offering a transcript. If your browser can only send audio to a server, we do not use it — you keep recording and self-review instead.

Questions

Are my recordings uploaded?

No. Recordings live in the tab’s memory and disappear when you leave, unless you press "Save on this device". Saved recordings can be deleted at any time.

Will it tell me if my accent is wrong?

No. Accents are not wrong. Feedback focuses on whether key words are clear, and any automatic transcript comparison says when it is unsure.

Why is speech recognition unavailable?

Your browser does not offer recognition that is guaranteed to run on the device. We never fall back to cloud recognition.
